Mark Edward Michielsen attended public school in Midland Park, New Jersey. He joined the Marine Corps in the same year he graduated High School in 1981. Mark began his career in military music after taking an instrumental audition while attending basic training in Parris Island. In June of 1982 Mark received his diploma after successful completion of the Basic Music course of instruction at the Armed Forces School of Music. Mark Michielsen has performed throughout the world in military and civilian venues. He has performed with the Virginia Beach Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Hawaii Symphony, Commonwealth Musical Stage, and many Jazz Ensembles and groups. He served as a trombone instrumentalist with the 2nd Marine Division Band, Camp Lejuene North Carolina; 1st Marine Division Band, Camp Pendleton California; III Marine Amphibious Force Band, Okinawa Japan; 4th Marine Aircraft Wing Band, New Orleans Louisiana; and the Marine Forces Pacific Band Hawaii. MGySgt Michielsen is a graduate of the Intermediate course and Enlisted Band Leader Courses attended at the Armed Forces School of Music. Some disciplines include music theory, composition, arranging, ear training and conducting. After completion of the Enlisted Band Leader Course, he was retained at the Armed Forces School of Music as an Instructor. There he taught Music Theory, Ear Training, Conducting, Composition and Arranging, then moving into a position as a Rehearsal Conductor for Jazz and Classical Ensembles. Mark was selected to participate in the Staff Degree Completion Program where he earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in Composition, graduating Cum Laude from Old Dominion University. After returning for a second tour of duty at the Armed Forces School of music Mark served with the Quantico Marine Band as the Enlisted Band Leader/Assistant Director. Returning back to the Armed Forces School of Music for a third tour as a Rehearsal Conductor for Jazz and Classical Ensembles. Earning a Master of Music Degree in Composition at Norfolk State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude, Mark Michielsen is one of the notably sought after Musicians in his field. Returned to the 2nd Marine Division as the Bandmaster/Senior Enlisted, where the Band was augmented with up to 200 Marines to form the Guard Force for Camp Blue Diamond, Ramadi Iraq. MGySgt Michielsen served in Combat operations in charge of the Guard Force. Mark returned with all his Marines and was ordered to serve as the Senior Enlisted for Marine Corps Music, Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington D.C. This assignment is handpicked and only ascertained by few Marines in the Marine Music Field. Mark also obtained the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant where only five allocations are filled at any time. Mark decided to retire shortly after his assignment to the Pentagon for family medical reasons in September 2008. After retirement Mark took auditions to pursue his Musical Performing Career. He took a short three month contract and cruised the Mediterranean and Caribbean performing on trombone and arranging music for the Emerald Princess Orchestra. Mark is a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 125. Mark E. Michielsen is a free lance musician in the Virginia Beach area and enjoys playing and Composing for his 17 Piece Jazz Ensemble. |
