THE MARK MICHIELSEN BIG BAND

MEET SOME OF THE  MUSICIANS

THIS BAND WAS JUST FORMED IN THE SUMMER OF 2010 AND it IS already TAKING OFF AND BEING RECONGNIZED.  HERE ARE A FEW OF THE MUSICIANS,  who have and who are performing with The Mark Michielsen Big Band, and other ensembles.

David Winslow

 David has just finished a  masters degree from the University

of North Texas and joined the US Army. David has completed

initial training at White Sands Missile Range in  New Mexico

and is spending 3 years at Ft. Monroe Army Base In Virginia.

While David was at North Texas, he worked at the University

of North Texas Jazz Trumpet and Trombone Workshop in 2004 and also was on faculty for the Plano All Star Jazz Camp in 2006, 2007 and 2008. David was the winner of the National Jazz Trombone Competition at the Eastern Trombone Workshop in 2001. While at UNT, David had many opportunities to play with some great jazz musicians. Some are Slide Hampton, Steve Wiest, The Brecker Brothers, Bob Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider and Jimmy Heath. I have also recorded 4 albums with the One O'Clock Lab Band and 2 albums with the Two O'Clock Lab Band. David has also had the pleasure of playing for the King Of Thailand in 2004 and  with The Michielsen Big Band in the past

Renee Kingan

Renee is a woodwind doubler and a teacher at the York County

School of the Arts in Williamsburg.  Renee studied music at

James Madison University, and she has worked for Disney,

Carnival Cruise Lines, and Busch Gardens playing in a variety

of ensembles.  When she’s not playing or teaching, Renee is

working on her PhD in American Studies at William and Mary or enjoying long-distance cycling  and performing with The Michielsen Big Band.

Skip Hancock

                                  Skip Hancock plays keyboards, arranges and                                   writes music.  He has worked in the                                                    Southeastern area of Virginia for over 25 years                                   in a variety of musical settings, leading his Jazz                                   quartets Interlude and Skylark since 1982. In 2002, he took a job as the music director for the Tom Netherton Show at the Williamsburg Music Theater, leading the eight-piece house orchestra (Tom Netherton was a star on the Lawrence Welk Show). Tom left the theater in 2004, but Skip still occasionally works with him at concerts around the country. These days he’s  a full-time musician; performing with his group Skylark, as a solo pianist, and with The Michielsen Big Band.

                 A native of the Hamptom Roads area, Ralph                                   Copley has been performing and teaching                                         music since the early seventies. He has been a                                   member of and/or performed in numerous                                         organizations such as: The Norfolk Symphony, The Virginia Opera, The Virginia Symphony, The Peninsula Symphony, The Virginia Beach Pops, The Frank Foster “Swing Masters” Big Band, The Super Jazz Big Band, The Copley Quartet, The Walter Noona Trio, The American Jazz Ensemble, The Tidewater Winds, Night Shift, Big Fun Band, DC3 band, Blue Pearl band, Black River Circus, Stratus, plus many other orchestral, show, dance, jazz, pop, blues and rock bands.  Ralph presently resides in Virginia Beach and still performs in many of the above mentioned organizations and records music professionally in his home recording studio and other area studios.  In addition to teaching privately in his own studio, he also teaches adjunct for Tidewater Community College, The Governor’s School for the Arts, Norfolk Collegent School, and other Virginia schools both public and private.  Currently enjoys performing with The Michielsen Big Band..

Ralph Copley

Tom Graper, trumpet, a native of Los Angeles, was on the

staff of the Navy School of Music for 15years, playing

first trumpet in the Virginia Beach  Symphony for 14 of

those years.  Since  retiring  from the Army he has played on

11 cruise ships, the paddlewheel steam boats out of New

Orleans, nine years at Busch Gardens and on the road with

various big bands. He currently teaches for the Governor's School for the Arts at Old Dominion University, plays in the Tidewater Winds professional concert Band, and with four local big bands.  A freelance musicians who enjoyed performing with The Michielsen Big Band in the past.

Carroll “Moose” Bailey

Moose played lead and jazz trumpet for the Continental

Army Band.  Performed in the Virginia Symphony directed by

Russell Stanger and shares the Lead chair in the Monday Night

Band.  He also performs with the Freemason Street Baptist

Brass Ensemble and  occasionally with The Michielsen Big Band..

                                  Daniel Leaverton received his Bachelor of                                   Science degree from Excelsior College in                                      Albany, NY.  He has been a woodwind                                          doubler in the U.S. Navy Band for the last 19                                   years. In addition to the Navy Band he is                                      currently the Musical Director for Glad Tidings Church in Norfolk, VA.  He studied saxophone and clarinet with the late Joe Davis at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK.  Daniel has performed with recording artists’ Marvin Stamm, Bobby Shew, Greg Soloman, Steve Wilkerson, The Temptations, Rufus Thomas, Mary Wilson, Ricky Kirkland, and Arno Marsh to name a few.   He has also had the privilege to play for current and former Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the United States and many foreign dignitaries.  Daniel enjoys performing with The Michielsen Big Band on occasions.
